Nollywood actress Damilola Adegbite has revealed why she has not remarried since her divorce from Ghanaian actor Chris Attoh in 2017, citing the weight of responsibility that comes with being a single mother. In a candid video shared on her Instagram story, Adegbite explained that her decision to remain unmarried is rooted in her commitment to her son, Brian, whom she shares with Attoh. She emphasized that dating as a single parent requires far more thought and caution than personal relationships typically demand.
Adegbite, known for her role in the popular Nigerian film Merry Men, stressed that choosing a partner now involves evaluating not just emotional compatibility, but also the potential partner’s character, morals, and values. She said she is not simply looking for someone to share her life with, but someone who can also become a positive and responsible figure in her child’s life. “You’re not just choosing a partner for yourself anymore. You are choosing a second parent for your child,” she stated clearly.
She further warned against rushing into relationships for emotional comfort or temporary relief. Adegbite pointed out that the person she brings into her life must be capable of treating her son as their own, creating a safe and nurturing environment. “You have to be sure that the person you are bringing into your life and into your child’s life is capable of being a good parent,” she said, adding that building a home is more important than building a relationship.
The actress and Attoh met while working together on the soap opera Tinsel, where they developed a romantic connection. They welcomed their son Brian in 2014 and tied the knot in a private ceremony in Accra, Ghana, in February 2015. Their marriage, however, lasted only about two years before they officially divorced in September 2017. Since then, Adegbite has remained focused on her career and her son’s well-being.
Her recent comments have sparked conversations about the challenges faced by single parents in Nigeria and across Africa, particularly when it comes to navigating love and relationships. Many have praised her for her maturity and prioritization of her child’s best interests. As she continues to build her career and raise her son, Damilola Adegbite’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of intentional choices in personal and family life. Her story may inspire others facing similar decisions to think deeply before taking the next step.
