Atiku Advises Dumping ADC Amid Presidential Leadership

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently addressed speculation about leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasizing his commitment to the party amidst a brewing leadership crisis. In an interview with BBC pidgin, Atiku dispelled claims of defection, highlighting his dedication to ADC’s resolution through judicial means.

Atiku underscored the party’s belief in Justice David Mark’s leadership, expressing confidence that the ongoing court proceedings would quickly settle the issue. He stated, “We believe the trial court will dispense the case as soon as possible, even before Congress. Observers are not lawyers, but we are confident the court will uphold David Mark’s leadership.” This remark reflects Atiku’s assurance in the legal process unfolding in the party.

Addressing questions about potential defection to other political parties due to the internal crisis, Atiku highlighted the strength of ADC’s organizational structure and financial investments. He noted, “Some of the parties don’t have structures. ADC is a coalition of the movement we started about one and a half years ago, so a lot of appropriation has gone into it. We are focused on concluding the judicial process and continuing our activities.” This assertion aimed to reassure party members and stakeholders about ADC’s stability and resources.

Atiku also addressed the question of leadership within ADC, particularly with regard to securing the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections. He emphasized the coalition of strong leaders within the party, including figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. Atiku remarked, “We have agreed… we are all leaders.” This statement reflects a sense of unity among ADC candidates, despite the internal challenges.

The former vice president’s comments come as ADC faces internal disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party is navigating these challenges by relying on its legal process and organizational strength to resolve its leadership crisis. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, ADC’s ability to manage its internal dynamics will be crucial in maintaining its momentum toward the upcoming elections.

The ongoing discussions within ADC set the stage for significant developments that could shape the party’s future and its role in the broader political arena. With legal proceedings and internal meetings underway, the party’s ability to address its leadership issues will determine its effectiveness and public perception as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections.
