The All Progressives Congress (APC) legacy stakeholders in Kano State have submitted three names to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as nominees for the vacant Deputy Governor position, following the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. The nominees, announced in a statement issued in Kano on Sunday, are Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, and Murtala Sule Garo. The move is part of the state’s constitutional process to fill the leadership vacancy and ensure continuity in governance.
Magaji Umar Gwammaja, who released the statement, emphasized that the three candidates were chosen for their proven leadership qualities and extensive experience in public service. He highlighted Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi’s strong administrative background, which includes service at both state and federal levels. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, according to Gwammaja, brings valuable legislative experience, while Murtala Sule Garo is noted for his long-standing service in local government and his role in the state executive council.
The APC leadership stressed that the nominees will undergo a thorough screening process by security agencies to verify their integrity and suitability for the position. This step is critical to ensuring that only candidates who meet national standards and ethical requirements are considered for appointment. After the security vetting, Governor Yusuf is expected to consult with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to align the selection with national political interests and ensure synergy across government levels.
Gwammaja explained that the consultation with the President is a constitutional and political necessity, designed to maintain unity within the ruling party and the broader federal structure. Once the consultations are completed, the governor will forward the final recommended name to the Kano State House of Assembly for formal screening and confirmation. This process adheres strictly to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates legislative approval for such appointments.
The submission of these nominees marks a significant step in the governance transition in Kano State, as stakeholders and the public await the outcome of the screening and confirmation process. The appointment of a new Deputy Governor is expected to strengthen the state’s leadership framework and support ongoing development initiatives. This development underscores the commitment of the APC and the state government to transparent and constitutionally sound leadership appointments.
