ADC Halts Congress Activities in Abia State

The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended all ward, local government, and state congresses originally scheduled for April 7 to April 14, 2026, following a recent court ruling. In a communication shared with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party members, and the public, the party announced its decision, citing a ruling by the Appeal Court that upheld the status quo ante bellum. This ruling, according to the party, led to the removal of the National Working Committee, which is led by David Mark, from INEC’s official website. As a result, the electoral commission instructed ADC state officers not to oversee the planned congresses, including the party’s National Convention.

The decision was made public in a statement signed by the Abia State Chairman of the ADC, Don Norman Obinna. Obinna clarified that the tenure of current ward, local government, and state executives in the state remains valid and unaffected by the suspension. Despite the changes, he called for unity and restraint among party members and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace during the period. “Party members, leaders, and stakeholders are urged to remain calm, stay positive, and promote the constructive message of ADC while refraining from acts that could disturb peace in their areas,” he said.

Obinna also assured party members and supporters that efforts are underway to reposition the party and restore stability. “Rest assured, efforts are ongoing to revitalise the party and restore normalcy,” he added, highlighting the party’s commitment to addressing the situation. Furthermore, he pledged to keep members informed of any further developments regarding the congresses and broader party matters.

The suspension of ADC’s regional congresses in Abia State is a significant development that underscores the party’s challenges amid internal and legal struggles. As the party navigates this period, its focus on maintaining peace and unity among its members is crucial for ensuring its continued relevance in the political landscape. The implications of the court ruling and subsequent actions by INEC will likely influence the party’s future strategy and the broader narrative around its efforts to revitalize its structure and operations.
