Governor Hyacinth Alia’s performance in infrastructure, industrialisation, workers’ welfare, and investment promotion will be the deciding factor in his 2027 re-election bid, according to the Benue State Government. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, made this statement while responding to criticisms from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and allies of former Governor Samuel Ortom. Kula dismissed the opposition’s claims as “tantrums, lies and political theatrics,” arguing that they have failed to offer a credible alternative to the current administration.
He emphasized that Governor Alia has remained focused on governance rather than engaging in political distractions. Kula pointed out that the state government is actively rebuilding Benue through road construction, industrial development, improved welfare for workers, and care for senior citizens. He highlighted billions of naira in investments as proof of growing confidence in the state’s economy. A key example cited was the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hudson Global Ltd for a proposed $5 billion investment aimed at transforming Benue’s economic landscape.
Kula also listed other achievements, including the construction of rural and urban roads, timely payment of salaries and gratuities, and the establishment of the Food Basket Bakery. He contrasted these developments with the previous administration under Ortom, alleging that workers were owed several months’ salaries and pensioners were left without over 70 months of entitlements, including accumulated gratuities. He further accused Ortom’s government of failing to address security challenges, leading to Benue being labelled Nigeria’s “IDP capital” with over 1.5 million residents displaced.
The spokesman questioned Ortom’s political consistency, noting his involvement in anti-party activities that contributed to the PDP’s collapse in 2023. Kula highlighted Ortom’s support for Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, despite claiming allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He also criticized Obi’s recent visit to Benue, stating the former Anambra State governor arrived in full campaign attire, making the political nature of the trip undeniable.
On security, Kula defended Governor Alia against accusations of silence following the Ayilamo killings, calling such claims “cheap, unfair and politically motivated.” He insisted that protecting lives and property remains a top priority for the current administration. Kula challenged Ortom and his media consultant, Mike Aondoakaa, to account for their records in office, citing N735 billion received during Ortom’s tenure and debts exceeding N300 billion, with another N139 billion reportedly unaccounted for.
Ultimately, Kula stressed that the 2027 election will be decided by voters, not press statements or political theatrics. He concluded that Benue’s progress under Alia speaks louder than propaganda, and the people will judge the administration based on tangible results. As the state moves forward, its focus remains on development, investment, and long-term progress.
