Ehilebo accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using state-sponsored thugs to intimidate and frustrate opposition activities, undermining democratic principles in the lead-up to the next election cycle. He rejected claims by the Benue State Government that Obi did not obtain prior permission before entering the state, citing Sections 41(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution. These constitutional provisions guarantee every Nigerian, including presidential candidates, the right to freedom of movement and peaceful assembly without needing advance approval from any government authority.
“Every Nigerian, presidential candidate or otherwise, has a constitutionally guaranteed right to enter, live and move freely within any state in Nigeria to conduct legitimate activities without prior permission or notice,” Ehilebo emphasized. He condemned the use of roadblocks and hired enforcers to stop opposition figures, stating such actions have no place in a constitutional democracy. APM called on security agencies to act swiftly, investigate the matter thoroughly, and bring all perpetrators to justice.
The party reiterated its commitment to peaceful electoral processes and vowed not to be deterred by threats or intimidation. It stressed that democratic participation must remain open and free for all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, this incident highlights growing concerns over the safety and freedom of political actors across the country.
