The federal government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has officially acknowledged and expressed deep gratitude to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), led by Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, for its generous donation of $265,854.00 towards the evacuation of 500 distressed Nigerians from South Africa. This contribution is part of a broader humanitarian effort to repatriate Nigerian nationals affected by escalating xenophobic and afrophobic attacks in the Southern African nation. The donation will specifically fund one-way air tickets for those stranded, ensuring safe and timely return to Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the RCCG’s gesture as a “significant demonstration of compassion, solidarity, and genuine commitment” to supporting vulnerable Nigerians abroad. The ministry emphasized that such partnerships between faith-based organizations and government institutions play a vital role in addressing social crises and promoting national welfare. It also highlighted that this collaboration strengthens the country’s ability to respond swiftly to emergencies affecting its citizens overseas.
The evacuation operation began on 10 June 2026, following a surge in violent attacks targeting Africans, including Nigerians, in South Africa. Since then, the federal government has successfully repatriated 1,640 Nigerian nationals. Of this number, 1,385 were fully sponsored by the government, while 255 benefited from private donations, including the RCCG’s recent contribution. The ongoing efforts reflect Nigeria’s sustained commitment to protecting its diaspora during times of crisis.
Currently, 202 Nigerians remain in South Africa awaiting final clearance from the country’s Department of Home Affairs before their evacuation can be completed. The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and Consulate General in Johannesburg continue to work closely with local Nigerian community associations and other support networks to identify and assist those wishing to return home. These diplomatic missions remain open and actively engaged in providing consular services and logistical support.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its appreciation for the RCCG’s leadership and called on other private organizations, philanthropists, development partners, and faith-based groups to join hands in supporting Nigerians in distress abroad.
