The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially launched its campaign for the September 26 local government elections in Enugu State, beginning with a high-energy rally in Oji River Local Government Area. The event, held at the Community Market Square in Egwu-Achi, brought together party leaders, candidates, and supporters to kickstart the electoral push. Key figures including Dr. Johnpaul Anih, State Chairman of the NDC; Dr. Sebastian Okafor, State Secretary; and Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, the party’s leader in Enugu State, led the campaign launch. They emphasized the party’s commitment to delivering responsive, accountable, and people-centered governance at the grassroots level.
Dr. Anih addressed a large crowd, urging residents of Oji River to vote en masse for all NDC candidates on election day. He highlighted that the party had fielded credible candidates with proven capacity and dedication to transform the local government and improve the lives of its people. He stressed the importance of rejecting political rhetoric and instead evaluating candidates based on character, competence, track record, and genuine commitment to development. Dr. Anih also called on the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and security agencies to ensure a free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process for all parties involved.
He further urged NDC supporters and candidates to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the election period, while spreading the party’s message of change and progress to every ward and polling unit. Dr. Sebastian Okafor echoed this sentiment, encouraging voters to choose leaders who prioritize the people’s welfare over personal or political gain. He affirmed the NDC’s resolve to build strong grassroots structures and provide effective representation across all 17 local government areas in Enugu State.
Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, speaking to the gathering, described the NDC as a trustworthy platform for political transformation and good governance. He urged voters to reject politicians who only show up during elections and instead support leaders committed to remaining accessible and accountable after assuming office. He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to win the election and called on supporters to stay united and focused until the final votes are cast.
Hon. Anderson Emerole, Chairman of the NDC in Oji River, thanked the state leadership for their efforts in strengthening the party and taking the campaign to the people. He assured them that Oji River residents were ready for a new political direction and would deliver massive support for the NDC on election day. Bishop James Jideofor, the party’s chairmanship candidate, promised a responsive, inclusive, and people-centered administration if elected. He pledged to focus on grassroots development, improve residents’ welfare, and collaborate with stakeholders to address community needs.
The campaign featured addresses from other party leaders and candidates, all rallying residents to support the NDC at the polls. A highlight of the event was the official presentation of Bishop Jideofor, his running mate Hon. Alison Nwankwo, and the party’s 20 councillorship candidates to the enthusiastic crowd. As the countdown to September 26 continues, the NDC is positioning itself as a viable alternative for transformative leadership in Enugu State’s local government elections.
