Oluyemisi Debo-Adesina, wife of veteran Nigerian journalist and former Ambassador to Togo, Adebowale (Debo) Adesina, has made an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu for financial assistance to help cover the escalating medical costs following her husband’s stroke in Canada. The appeal, sent via a letter dated Sunday, highlights the family’s growing distress as medical bills have surpassed CAD $205,000 as of August 24, 2026, with daily charges continuing to rise. Debo Adesina, who served as Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian and held diplomatic roles under previous administrations, suffered a severe stroke on July 9 while visiting his family in Canada.
The former ambassador was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Trillium Hospital in Mississauga, where he remained until August 11. He was then transferred to Etobicoke General Hospital, where he continues to receive critical care. According to Mrs. Debo-Adesina, her husband spent a prolonged period in an induced coma but is now showing signs of emerging from it. Despite this progress, his condition remains serious and requires constant monitoring and intensive treatment. The family is hopeful for a full recovery but faces mounting pressure due to the high cost of medical services abroad.
Mrs. Debo-Adesina emphasized that the hospital has raised concerns about continuing his care unless arrangements are made to address the outstanding bills. She described the situation as “deeply painful” and a “vulnerable moment” for the family. In her letter, she reminded President Tinubu of Debo Adesina’s contributions as a respected journalist, public intellectual, diplomat, and trusted colleague over the years. She urged the president to lend support, noting that his intervention could make a significant difference during this crisis.
She expressed deep gratitude for any assistance and requested direct contact to discuss how contributions could be made. As a wife and mother, she acknowledged the difficulty of making such a public plea but stressed that every day of medical care is precious and every contribution matters.
