The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially confirmed Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke as the gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, bringing closure to a protracted internal party dispute. The confirmation came after INEC posted Adegoke’s Form EC9, along with those of other candidates, on its official website early Saturday morning. This development marks a key step ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Oyo State and 27 other states across Nigeria.
Adegoke’s name appearing on INEC’s portal signifies that he is the legally recognized candidate of the ADC for the upcoming polls. His submission was verified and published by the electoral body, thereby resolving uncertainty that had surrounded the party’s candidate selection process. The display of his form ends weeks of speculation and conflicting claims from various aspirants within the ADC who had contested his nomination.
In response to the announcement, Adegoke called on all aggrieved party members and supporters to set aside differences and unite behind the common goal of winning the election. He emphasized the importance of party unity and urged everyone to respect the decision made by both the ADC leadership and INEC. “We, therefore, urge all other aspirants and their supporters to desist forthwith from any further misrepresentations and to respect the decision of the party and the position of INEC,” he stated.
He also appealed to the broader electorate in Oyo State to remain calm, focused, and united during the campaign period. “We call on our members, supporters and the good people of Oyo State to remain calm, united and focused as we mobilise ahead of the elections,” Adegoke added. His message underscores a strategic effort to consolidate support and avoid internal divisions that could weaken the party’s chances.
The governorship election in Oyo State is part of a wider set of state elections taking place nationwide. With INEC’s formal recognition, Adegoke now joins other candidates from different political parties in the race to succeed the current governor. His candidacy will be tested in the coming months through campaigns, debates, and voter outreach.
As the electoral calendar advances, Adegoke’s entry into the race adds another dimension to the political landscape in Oyo State. His appointment as the ADC’s standard-bearer sets the stage for an intense contest, with all eyes on how he will navigate the challenges of campaigning amid existing political dynamics. The next few weeks will be crucial in shaping public perception and determining the trajectory of his bid for the governorship.
