The Senior Political Assistant to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has warned that stepping down from the 2027 presidential race would severely weaken the opposition’s momentum. Speaking on Tuesday, Olarewaju emphasized that Atiku remains the only viable candidate capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu both locally and internationally. He stressed that Atiku’s continued presence in the race is crucial for building a strong, unified opposition platform beyond 2027.
Olarewaju made his remarks in a post on X, where he argued that an election featuring only the incumbent as a major contestant is fundamentally different from one involving a genuine transition of power. He pointed out that Atiku’s leadership serves as a bridge for future opposition efforts, helping to consolidate support and maintain political energy across Nigeria’s diverse regions. According to him, no other figure currently possesses the same level of experience, visibility, or international credibility to match Tinubu’s campaign machinery.
He further explained that each election cycle brings unique dynamics, and Nigerians must prepare accordingly. Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Olarewaju noted that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s lack of full commitment to Tinubu’s victory contributed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) losing key states like Lagos. He added that this lack of coordination allowed widespread communal rigging to occur in several parts of the country, undermining the electoral process.
Olarewaju’s comments come amid growing speculation about Atiku’s political future and whether he will continue his presidential bid in 2027. While some voices within the opposition have called for younger candidates to take the lead, Olarewaju insists that Atiku’s experience and track record make him indispensable. He believes that removing Atiku from the race now would leave a vacuum that could be exploited by the ruling party, weakening the opposition’s ability to mobilize voters and present a credible alternative.
The ADC, which Atiku leads, continues to position itself as a key player in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. With the 2027 elections still over two years away, the party is focusing on grassroots organizing, policy development, and coalition-building. Olarewaju’s message underscores the importance of sustained leadership in shaping Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, especially in the face of entrenched incumbency.
As Nigeria prepares for its next general election, the role of experienced figures like Atiku Abubakar remains central to any serious challenge to the current administration. The coming months will likely see intensified debates within opposition parties about strategy, leadership, and voter engagement. For now, Olarewaju’s call for Atiku’s continued candidacy highlights the stakes involved in ensuring a competitive and fair electoral contest in 2027.
