The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled its strategy to lead a united opposition coalition aimed at defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed that ongoing discussions are still open for building a broad alliance of opposition forces ahead of the next presidential poll. He emphasized that only a strong, cohesive opposition can effectively challenge the APC’s dominance and present a credible alternative to Nigerians.
Abdullahi stressed that the ADC remains committed to uniting various political groups and interests to strengthen the opposition’s chances in 2027. “We still have not given up the possibility. Don’t forget that we started this coalition building. And we still believe that the window has not closed for the possibility of building a coalition ahead of 2027 because we believe that the opposition stands a better chance if we are all working together,” he stated. This declaration comes amid shifting dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly following the exit of key figures from previous coalition efforts.
The ADC’s push for a unified front follows the departure of former presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the party. Obi and Kwankwaso left the ADC in May 2025 to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal conflicts and unresolved court cases as reasons for their move. Their exit marked a significant setback for earlier coalition-building initiatives, but the ADC has since restructured its leadership and campaign framework.
In response to the defections, the ADC held its primary election and selected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its flagbearer for the 2027 election. The party also named former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as its running mate, signaling a strategic alignment with experienced political leaders. These appointments reflect the ADC’s intent to project stability and national appeal as it prepares for the upcoming electoral contest.
Despite the challenges posed by factionalism and shifting alliances, the ADC continues to position itself as a central force in the opposition movement.
