The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 10 officers in a deadly gun battle with suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, marking one of the deadliest attacks on security personnel in the region in recent months. The encounter occurred on Monday morning along the Rafin Makuku axis, where police operatives intercepted a group of armed suspects believed to be moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states. In addition to the 10 officers killed, two civilians also lost their lives during the violent clash, while two police personnel sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the incident took place at approximately 9:25 a.m. when police units engaged the suspected bandits. The operation resulted in the neutralisation of 17 attackers, with four motorcycles used by the criminals destroyed during the exchange. The police stated that the area has since been brought under control, and additional personnel have been deployed to ensure continued surveillance and pursuit of any remaining fleeing suspects.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, describing the fallen officers as heroes who gave their lives while performing their duty to protect citizens. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized that their sacrifice would not go unnoticed. “This is a painful loss to the police force and to our nation,” Disu said, reaffirming the commitment of the force to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
The remains of the 10 officers have been conveyed to Birnin Kebbi for appropriate burial arrangements, while the police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ambush. Authorities have assured the families of the deceased and injured personnel of full support, including psychological and financial assistance. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in combating banditry in the Northwest region, which has seen increased violence in recent weeks.
Despite the heavy toll, the police remain determined to sustain operations against criminal elements in the area.
