Senator Rufai Sani Hanga has clarified his political stance, confirming he remains a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) despite widespread speculation about his impending defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The development comes after reports surfaced of his meetings with top APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, fueling rumors of a potential party switch. Speaking on a local radio programme in Kano on Tuesday, Hanga dismissed the defection claims, stating firmly that he has not made any plans to leave the NDC.
While asserting his loyalty to the NDC, Hanga acknowledged the party’s limited chances in the upcoming presidential election. He stated that the NDC lacks the national acceptance and political strength needed to challenge the ruling APC. “NDC will lose Nigeria, they can’t make any impact,” he said, though he expressed confidence in the party’s ability to win in Kano State. “But I’m certain they will win Kano, this I know,” he added, highlighting regional support as a key factor.
Hanga also addressed his relationship with former Kano State Governor and NDC national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso. He emphasized that their relationship remains respectful, despite political differences. He recounted how Kwankwaso’s son, Mustapha Kwankwaso, was selected as the party’s running mate for the gubernatorial election, a decision that came after Hanga had offered to serve as campaign manager for Mustapha. According to Hanga, Kwankwaso’s emissary, through NDC Chairman Hussaini Isa Mairiga, had approached him with the proposal, which he accepted.
However, Hanga revealed that he was later approached by Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who was named as the NDC’s gubernatorial candidate, and asked to serve as his deputy. Though he viewed this as a demotion, he accepted the role. He only learned afterward that Mustapha Kwankwaso had been chosen as the running mate, a move that shifted the political dynamics within the party. Despite the changes, Hanga maintained his commitment to the NDC and its campaign.
The senator’s comments come at a crucial time as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with party realignments and candidate selections shaping the political landscape. His statement adds clarity to the ongoing speculation surrounding NDC’s internal dynamics and its national electoral prospects. As the party continues to position itself for the upcoming elections, Hanga’s loyalty may influence voter perception and party cohesion in Kano and beyond.
