Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly attack on Zah, a community in Yadul District of Hong Local Government Area in Adamawa State, killing four people, including a forest guard, and abducting a woman on the evening of Monday, July 27. The assailants arrived on motorcycles, opened fire on residents, set houses ablaze, and fled after a gun battle with security forces. The attack marks another violent incident in a region that has become a hotspot for terrorism due to its proximity to the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, a known haven for Boko Haram operatives.
Zah is among several communities in Hong LGA that have faced repeated attacks over the past months and years. The persistent insecurity in the area has been attributed to its strategic location near the Sambisa Forest, which remains a key operational base for Boko Haram. The attackers’ use of motorcycles and sporadic gunfire indicates a pattern of hit-and-run tactics commonly employed by insurgents to maximize chaos and minimize exposure.
According to reports gathered by DAILY POST on Tuesday, the violence began in the evening when the terrorists stormed the community, shooting indiscriminately and targeting civilians. The forest guard, who was stationed to protect the area from criminal and terrorist activities, was among those killed. Three other residents also lost their lives in the assault. In addition to the fatalities, one middle-aged woman was abducted before security forces responded and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat.
The Executive Chairman of Hong LGA, Aliyu Saad Yerima Hong, confirmed the incident and praised the swift response of security personnel. He noted that the deployment of additional troops to the area has helped restore a sense of normalcy. “Residents should remain vigilant, cooperate closely with security agencies, and promptly report any suspicious activity in their surroundings,” he advised. He also expressed deep appreciation for the bravery and dedication of the security forces, stating that their timely intervention likely prevented a higher death toll.
The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where communities continue to bear the brunt of terrorism despite government efforts to restore peace. The region remains vulnerable due to porous borders and the persistent presence of armed groups.
