Abayomi Tella, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on residents to reject the imposition of governorship candidates from outside the state ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing the need for leaders with deep-rooted connections to Ogun. Speaking during an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM in Abeokuta, Tella stressed that governance should be led by individuals who understand the state’s culture, history, and developmental challenges. He highlighted the party’s “Ogun for Ogun” campaign as a reflection of this belief, urging voters to prioritize candidates who have lived and participated in the state’s affairs.
Tella explained that leaders who are native to Ogun State are more likely to be committed to its growth and development, as they have firsthand knowledge of the people’s needs and aspirations. He used his own background as an example, noting that he was born in Agbara, Ogun State, and has spent his life engaging with the state’s communities. “He knows this state like the back of his hand,” he said, adding that such familiarity enables leaders to make informed decisions that benefit the people. He warned that imported candidates may lack genuine commitment and could appoint allies from other states, undermining local interests.
The PDP chairman also expressed concern over attempts to present candidates without strong ties to Ogun, urging residents to remain vigilant. “I’m only telling you that the people of Ogun State must be alert. They should not allow impostors in their states,” he stated. He emphasized that Ogun voters are politically aware and capable of making informed choices at the polls, and should not be swayed by external influences or party machinations. Tella reiterated that the 2027 governorship election must be a true reflection of the people’s will, free from imposition.
In response to questions about Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s membership in the PDP and compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) registration requirements, Tella confirmed that all procedures were followed correctly. He stated that Obasanjo had been a member of the party before the deadline and had officially resigned from her previous party, fully meeting the Electoral Act’s provisions. “Everything that is done are perfectly done and are in line with the Electoral Act,” he affirmed.
As the 2027 elections approach, Tella’s call for local leadership underscores a growing demand for accountability and relevance in Nigerian politics. The PDP’s stance may influence voter behavior and shape the political landscape in Ogun State in the coming years.
