Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson Amid 2027 ADC VP Dispute

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson, a move that comes amid growing political discussions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Okonkwo, a prominent chieftain of the ADC, confirmed the appointment in a statement shared on his official X handle on Thursday, expressing deep gratitude to Atiku for the trust placed in him. He described the role as a significant responsibility and a testament to Atiku’s commitment to inclusive leadership and consensus-building within the party.

Okonkwo emphasized that Atiku’s leadership style prioritizes dialogue over confrontation, especially when associates voice differing opinions. “Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” he stated. This approach, according to Okonkwo, was evident during recent discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders, where the political interests of the South-East were thoroughly addressed. He noted that despite challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, the party has committed to ensuring the South-East’s representation in national leadership.

The appointment follows Okonkwo’s earlier public criticism of the ADC’s reported plan to select a vice-presidential candidate from the South-South region. He had warned that such a move could deepen the marginalisation of the South-East, a region that has not produced either a president or vice president since 1999. Okonkwo argued that the decision would perpetuate regional imbalance in Nigeria’s political structure and undermine efforts toward equitable representation.

In his statement, Okonkwo also acknowledged the contributions of key figures within the ADC, including former National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, Kashim Imam, and Ekene Onwuka, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties. He thanked his family, fans, and friends for their prayers and support, which he said played a vital role in his appointment. “I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he added.

The appointment of Okonkwo as Atiku’s spokesperson is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the ADC’s communication strategy and broaden its appeal, particularly in the South-East. As the 2027 elections draw closer, the party’s internal dynamics and leadership choices will continue to shape its national positioning. This development underscores the importance of unity and representation in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
