The Osun State chapter of the Action Peoples Party (APP) has urged security agencies to enforce a recent Federal High Court judgment that declared the continued occupation of local government offices by All Progressives Congress (APC) officials unconstitutional. The party’s chairman, Odesola Titus, issued the appeal on Sunday, emphasizing that the court’s ruling in Osogbo affirmed the legitimacy of the newly elected local government officials. The judgment, delivered on Monday, June 15, 2026, dismissed an application by APC chairmen seeking to extend their tenure beyond October 22, 2025, and ruled they lacked legal standing to file the suit. The APP stressed that the decision does not invalidate the local government elections held on February 22, 2025, which were won by candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Odesola Titus highlighted that the court’s decision reinforces the authority of the legally elected council chairmen and councillors, urging security agencies to act swiftly to ensure compliance. He warned against any illegal interference with the mandate of the newly elected officials, stressing the importance of protecting democratic processes. The party called on security forces to uphold the rule of law and maintain peace and order in all local government areas of Osun State. The APP expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by security agencies so far and reiterated its expectation that democratic values will be respected and preserved.
The appeal comes amid ongoing tensions over the control of local government offices. Governor Ademola Adeleke had previously announced that the PDP-elected officials would resume duties on Monday, June 22, 2026, following the February 22, 2025, elections. On February 23, 2025, the governor swore in the elected officials but advised them to refrain from occupying council secretariats to prevent violence. Despite this, APC officials, whose tenure expired in October 2025, had challenged the transition in court, seeking to remain in office. The Federal High Court’s ruling now clears the way for the PDP officials to take over without legal obstruction.
The APP’s statement underscores the party’s commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law. It also reflects growing pressure on security agencies to enforce judicial decisions and prevent political unrest. As Osun State prepares for the official resumption of elected officials, the focus remains on ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition. The outcome of this legal and political development could set a precedent for local governance across Nigeria.
