Seplat Energy Appoints Tony Elumelu as Chairman, Names Effiong Okon as CEO

Seplat Energy Plc has announced a major leadership transition, appointing Tony Elumelu as the next Chairman and Engr. Effiong Okon as Chief Executive Officer, marking a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s leading indigenous energy company. The appointments, disclosed in a notice filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) and signed by Company Secretary Edith Onwuchekwa, will take effect in phases: Elumelu will assume the role of Chairman on January 1, 2027, while Okon will become CEO on August 1, 2026. This strategic shift follows the tenure of current Chairman Senator Udoma Udo Udoma and reflects Seplat’s commitment to strengthening its governance and operational excellence.

Tony Elumelu, a prominent Nigerian businessman and investor, is the Founder and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, a pan-African investment firm with diverse interests in energy, power, financial services, technology, healthcare, hospitality, and real estate. He is also the pioneer of Africapitalism, a philosophy that champions private sector-led development across Africa. His leadership extends to major institutions, including the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group and the Transcorp Group, one of Nigeria’s largest listed conglomerates with significant investments in power generation and hospitality. Seplat highlighted that Elumelu’s deep experience in corporate governance, institution building, and value creation will be instrumental in guiding the company through its next phase of growth.

Engr. Effiong Okon, who will take over as CEO, brings over 35 years of experience in the energy sector. He joined Seplat in 2018 and has held key roles, including Operations Director, New Energy Director, and Managing Director of the ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC). Under his leadership, AGPC achieved first gas production in January 2026, a landmark milestone in Nigeria’s gas industry. The board expressed confidence in Okon’s operational expertise and his intimate knowledge of Seplat’s business, which will ensure continuity and support long-term strategic goals.

The leadership changes come at a crucial time as Seplat continues to expand its upstream and gas operations, aligning with Nigeria’s energy security initiatives and the growing demand for domestic gas. The company is also positioning itself to capitalize on broader energy transition opportunities across Africa. Investors are expected to closely monitor the transition, given Elumelu’s proven track record in building resilient institutions and Okon’s success in delivering large-scale energy projects. This leadership reshuffle underscores Seplat’s ambition to remain a globally competitive and resilient energy player in Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
