Osun Police Arrest Man for Spreading False Bandit Invasion Alert on Social Media

A 22-year-old man, Odetayo Adebayo Samuel from Ila Orangun in Osun State, has been arrested by the Osun State Police Command for allegedly spreading false security information on social media, which triggered widespread panic across the state. The incident occurred after Samuel posted a video on Facebook on June 1, 2026, through an account named ‘Odetayo Oluwasegun’, falsely claiming that bandits had invaded Osun State. The video quickly spread across various social media platforms, causing fear and alarm among residents who believed the threat was real.

The police confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday in Osogbo by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and signed by the spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi. Preliminary investigations revealed that the video did not show a bandit attack as claimed, but instead depicted members of the public restraining an individual who was experiencing a mental health crisis. This misrepresentation led to unnecessary public anxiety and disrupted community calm in several parts of the state.

Samuel was apprehended on June 3, 2026, and taken into custody for further questioning. However, following appeals from his elderly parents and a public apology issued by the suspect, the police decided to warn him and release him. The decision was made after the command assessed the circumstances and determined that no further legal action was necessary at this time.

CP Ibrahim Gotan used the opportunity to caution the public against sharing unverified information that could cause fear or disturb public peace. He emphasized the police’s zero-tolerance policy towards the misuse of digital platforms to spread falsehoods. The commissioner urged residents to always verify information before sharing it online, especially during times of heightened security concerns.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in Nigeria’s digital space, where false claims can spread rapidly and cause real-world consequences. Social media platforms continue to play a significant role in shaping public perception, and authorities are increasingly stepping up efforts to combat fake news. As more people rely on online sources for news, the responsibility to verify content before sharing becomes even more critical.

This case serves as a reminder that spreading false information, even unintentionally, can have serious social impacts. The Osun State Police Command remains vigilant and committed to maintaining public order through swift action and public education. As digital communication continues to evolve, so too must the public’s awareness and responsibility in using these tools responsibly.
