Paul Onuachu has reaffirmed his belief in the Super Eagles’ ability to compete with any team in world football, despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Trabzonspor striker made the statement ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal, which serve as crucial preparation for future competitions. Onuachu emphasized that the national team still boasts world-class talent and remains determined to prove their quality on the global stage.
The 29-year-old forward acknowledged the pain of missing out on the World Cup, describing it as a difficult moment for the entire squad. However, he stressed that football continues to move forward and that the focus must now shift to rebuilding and preparing for future challenges. “Sad we’re not going to the World Cup because we have good players, great players, world-class players, but unfortunately we are not going to the World Cup, but it’s football,” Onuachu said, reflecting on the disappointment with honesty and maturity.
Onuachu also highlighted the importance of team unity and the value of returning to camp with his teammates. He expressed excitement about reuniting with the squad and working together to improve cohesion ahead of high-profile matches. “It’s always nice to come around the team and meet the boys again. We are ready, prepared, and we have the quality to play against any team in the world,” he added, showing confidence in Nigeria’s potential.
His own career resurgence has been a key part of his journey. After a challenging spell at Southampton, where he scored only four goals in 36 appearances, Onuachu found renewed form at Trabzonspor. He initially joined the Turkish club on loan in 2023, scoring 15 goals in 21 league matches, and later returned on a permanent deal. In the 2025/2026 season, he finished as joint-top scorer in the Süper Lig, winning the Golden Boot with 22 goals in 30 appearances.
Onuachu credited his success to playing in a system that suits his strengths and being part of a team that understands his abilities. “When you’re in a team who plays to your strength, who knows your quality, everything will always work out,” he said. He also recalled his determination before returning to Trabzonspor, where he had previously left unfinished business. “I made a video for the Trabzonspor fans and told them I’m coming back stronger and better,” he said, adding that he fulfilled his promise.
As Nigeria prepares for the friendlies, Onuachu’s leadership and confidence offer a positive outlook for the team’s future. His performances in Turkey have not only revitalized his career but also strengthened his role as a key figure in the Super Eagles. With the next major tournament on the horizon, his words signal a renewed commitment to excellence and national pride.
