Nigerian Right Back Signs Pre-Contract with Waldhof Mannheim After Stockport County Confirmation

Stockport County has announced their retained and released list following the end of the 2025-2026 season, confirming that German-born Nigerian defender Jid Okeke will leave Edgeley Park after a brief but promising stint with the club. The 21-year-old right-back, who joined Stockport’s Emerging Talents programme in early 2024, has signed a pre-contract agreement with German club SV Waldhof Mannheim. As part of the transfer, Stockport County will receive training compensation for the young defender’s development.

Okeke’s journey to professional football began in the youth academies of Oldham Athletic and St Pauli before he made the move to Stockport. Despite limited first-team opportunities, he made six appearances for the Hatters in the 2025-2026 season. In pursuit of more consistent playing time, he was loaned out to several non-league clubs including South Shields, Hereford, Chester, and Rochdale. His most significant spell came with Walsall, where he signed a season-long loan deal ahead of the 2025-2026 campaign.

During his time at Walsall, Okeke featured in 30 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals to the team’s efforts. His performances during the loan period showcased his potential and attracted interest from clubs abroad, culminating in his move to SV Waldhof Mannheim. The transfer marks a new chapter for the young defender, who is now set to compete in Germany’s 3. Liga, aiming to build on his growing experience.

In contrast, another Nigerian player, Ibadan-born centre-back Josh Olowu, has been retained by Stockport County for the upcoming season. Olowu, a former Arsenal youth academy product, remains under contract with the club until June 30, 2028. His absence from the League One playoff final against Bolton Wanderers was due to injury, but he is expected to return to full fitness and continue playing a key role in the defensive line.

The retention of Olowu and the departure of Okeke highlight Stockport County’s strategy to balance youth development with experienced players. While Okeke seeks greater exposure in Germany, his time at Stockport and Walsall has laid a solid foundation for his professional career. Meanwhile, Olowu’s continued presence offers stability and leadership in the backline as the club prepares for the next season.

This transfer update reflects the dynamic nature of football development in Nigeria and beyond, with young talents gaining opportunities abroad while maintaining strong ties to their roots. As Okeke steps into a new league, his journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring Nigerian defenders aiming to make their mark in European football.
