Pedestrian Killed in Road Accident While Crossing Street in Ogun State

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a Toyota Coaster bus along the Imowo-Ibadan road inward Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE. The incident occurred on Sunday around 4:45 p.m., leading to significant traffic congestion in the area due to the obstruction caused by the bus. The victim, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was reportedly attempting to cross the road when the collision happened.

TRACE’s public relations officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, stated that the deceased allegedly failed to check for oncoming traffic before stepping onto the road. This failure to observe road safety protocols contributed to the tragic outcome. The agency emphasized that such incidents highlight the importance of pedestrian vigilance, especially on busy highways where vehicle speeds are often high.

Following the accident, TRACE operatives and police officers from the Obalende Division were swiftly deployed to the scene. Their immediate response focused on managing traffic flow and conducting rescue operations. The team worked to clear the road and ensure the safety of other road users during the emergency.

The body of the deceased was carried by TRACE personnel into an OGSAS ambulance and transported to the General Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode for further procedures. The bus involved in the accident was later evacuated and moved to the Police Area Command in Igbeba for investigation. Authorities are expected to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether the driver was at fault or if other factors contributed.

Traffic movement along the Imowo-Ibadan route has since been restored, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless road behavior. TRACE continues to urge all road users, especially pedestrians, to exercise caution and follow traffic rules to prevent avoidable tragedies.

This accident adds to the growing list of road fatalities in Nigeria, where poor road infrastructure, disregard for traffic laws, and inadequate pedestrian crossings remain persistent challenges. The agency’s response underscores its commitment to road safety and public awareness. As investigations continue, the incident may prompt renewed calls for improved safety measures along high-risk routes in Ogun State and beyond.
