Visa has partnered with First Bank of Nigeria Limited to launch a new Naira Visa Debit Card, aimed at expanding access to electronic payment services for retail consumers across the country. The initiative, which supports Nigeria’s cashless economy drive, allows FirstBank customers to make secure transactions at Point of Sale terminals, ATMs, and online platforms both locally and internationally. The card is designed to simplify everyday banking activities such as grocery shopping, utility bill payments, and online purchases.
This collaboration comes as financial institutions align with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless policy, which seeks to reduce reliance on physical cash and promote digital financial inclusion. The Naira Visa Debit Card offers a secure, convenient, and widely accepted payment solution, leveraging Visa’s global network to serve customers in Nigeria and abroad. By offering a local currency-denominated card, FirstBank and Visa are addressing the need for accessible digital tools that cater to diverse income groups.
Chuma Ezirim, Group Executive for eBusiness and Retail Products at FirstBank, emphasized the bank’s commitment to enhancing digital financial services. “Everyday transactions should be simple, secure and rewarding,” Ezirim said, highlighting how the card makes routine payments easier for customers. He also noted that expanding electronic payment access helps more Nigerians transition confidently from cash-based systems to digital platforms, especially in underserved communities.
Andrew Uaboi, Vice President and Cluster Head for West Africa at Visa, stressed the importance of inclusive payment infrastructure. “A strong payments ecosystem is one that works for everyone,” Uaboi said, adding that the new card extends reliable electronic payment access to everyday Nigerian consumers. The partnership reflects Visa’s broader strategy to deepen digital payment penetration and strengthen Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.
The launch also enhances FirstBank’s existing Visa card portfolio, which includes credit cards and premium lifestyle products tailored to different customer segments. Industry experts believe this expansion will support growth in retail banking, e-commerce, and digital financial services as more Nigerians adopt online and mobile payment solutions. The new Naira Visa Debit Card is now available to eligible FirstBank account holders through the bank’s branches nationwide.
As Nigeria continues to digitize its financial landscape, initiatives like this partnership play a crucial role in building a more inclusive and efficient economy. The widespread adoption of such tools could further accelerate the country’s transition toward a cashless society, benefiting consumers, businesses, and the broader economy.
