Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have been drawn into Group F of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Poland from September 5 to 27, 2026, alongside Spain, China, and New Caledonia. The official draw was held on Friday in Łódź, Poland, marking the beginning of the countdown for Nigeria’s quest to claim their first U-20 World Cup title. The tournament will be hosted across four Polish cities — Łódź, Katowice, Sosnowiec, and Bielsko-Biała — and will feature 24 of the world’s top youth women’s teams competing in FIFA’s premier age-grade competition.
The Falconets secured their place in the global finals after a hard-fought victory in the African qualification playoffs against Malawi. They won the two-legged tie 3-2 on aggregate, starting with a 2-0 home win in Ikenne before losing 2-1 in the return leg in Lilongwe. Despite the defeat in Malawi, the Falconets’ strong first-leg performance was enough to book their ticket to Poland 2026, continuing Nigeria’s strong tradition in youth women’s football.
Group F promises to be highly competitive, with Spain entering as one of the tournament’s favourites due to their deep youth development system and recent success in women’s age-grade tournaments. China also presents a formidable challenge, known for their disciplined approach and extensive international experience at youth levels. Meanwhile, New Caledonia will make their debut appearance in the tournament, adding an element of unpredictability to the group.
Nigeria has a proud history in the U-20 Women’s World Cup, having reached the final on two previous occasions. The Falconets are now aiming to go one step further and claim their first world title at this level. Their consistent performance at the youth level has long been a pipeline for the senior national team, the Super Falcons, with several players progressing from the Falconets to the senior squad.
With the draw now complete, the focus shifts to preparation. The Falconets are expected to intensify their training camps and arrange international friendlies to fine-tune their tactics and build team cohesion ahead of the tournament. The Nigerian Football Federation and technical staff will be working closely to ensure the team is fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
As the countdown begins, Nigerian football fans are hopeful that the Falconets can rise to the occasion and make a deep run in the tournament. The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be a major platform for Nigeria’s young talent to shine on the global stage.
