A man identified as Bala Yusuf, a native of Dutse Local Government Area in Jigawa State, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly attempting to murder a driver and steal his vehicle in Bauchi. The incident, which occurred after a journey from Abuja to Jos, has sparked concern over road safety and passenger security in Nigeria. The suspect, who hired the driver to transport him from Abuja to Jos, allegedly deceived the driver into continuing the trip to Bauchi under the pretence of visiting family. This manipulation led to a dangerous situation that culminated in an attempted vehicle theft and assault.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Habib, the suspect laced the driver’s food with sleeping pills upon arrival in Bauchi. After the driver lost consciousness, Yusuf attempted to flee with the vehicle, which was valued at approximately N5 million. The police intercepted him in possession of the car, and the victim was immediately taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for medical evaluation. The hospital staff confirmed the driver was treated for the effects of the drug and is currently recovering.
The arrest was made following a swift response by police operatives who acted on information and surveillance. The command has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are also reviewing the suspect’s background and motives, including whether he had prior criminal records or connections to similar cases. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant, especially when engaging in long-distance travel with unfamiliar individuals.
This case highlights the growing risks associated with unregulated transportation and the need for increased safety measures for drivers and passengers alike. It also underscores the importance of verifying the identity and intentions of passengers before allowing them into vehicles. The Bauchi State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and will charge the suspect to court once the investigation is complete. The incident serves as a warning to both drivers and passengers to exercise caution during intercity travel in Nigeria.
