Three Lives Lost in Fatal Accident on Ibadan-Lagos Expressway

Three male adults have been confirmed dead in a tragic road accident that occurred on Sunday along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State. The collision, which took place at approximately 1:04 p.m. in the Oniworo area, involved a blue Lexus 1200 Jeep with registration number GGE 18 JV and an unregistered black Boxer motorcycle. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that a total of eight male adults were involved in the incident, with three losing their lives, one sustaining injuries, and four others escaping unharmed.

According to Odunsi Afolabi, Public Relations Officer of the FRSC Ogun State Sector, the accident was caused by excessive speed leading to a tyre burst. He stated that the rescue team from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the distress call at 13:06 hrs. The injured victim was promptly rushed to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the FOS Morgue in Ipara for further procedures.

Afolabi emphasized that the suspected causes of the crash were speed violation and tyre burst, both of which are common contributors to road accidents in Nigeria. He stressed the importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, especially before long journeys. The FRSC continues to urge drivers to prioritize safety and avoid reckless driving practices that endanger lives.

Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, the Sector Commander, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He used the incident as a reminder to all road users to comply with traffic regulations and conduct regular vehicle checks. Ogunjobi highlighted that tyre bursts and overspeeding remain major factors in road crashes across the country, particularly on major highways like the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway.

This incident adds to the growing concern over road safety in Nigeria, where accidents continue to claim lives daily. The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws and conducting regular patrols to reduce the number of preventable crashes. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant, avoid speeding, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before hitting the highway.

As the investigation into the accident continues, authorities are urging the public to report any unsafe driving behaviors and to support efforts aimed at making Nigeria’s roads safer for everyone. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of negligence on the road and the urgent need for collective responsibility among drivers and passengers alike.
