Adebayo Adelabu Claims Tinubu Gave Green Light for Oyo Guber Bid, Says Hes His Son

Adebayo Adelabu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Oyo State, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has given him the green light to resign from his ministerial position and contest the upcoming gubernatorial election. The former Minister of Labour and Employment confirmed that he met with the President last week to discuss his political ambition, emphasizing that Tinubu personally encouraged him to pursue his dream. Adelabu stated that the President acknowledged his long-standing service and expressed support for his transition into state politics, affirming that he would not stand in the way of his ambition.

Adelabu, who has been serving as a federal minister, explained that he delayed his resignation to ensure he had the opportunity to meet with President Tinubu before formally stepping down. He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had set March 31 as the deadline for the submission of forms for the 2023 governorship election, and he wanted to consult with the person who appointed him before making the move. He added that Tinubu also allowed other APC leaders, including Sakotun and Sakosi, to meet with him, indicating a broader effort to reach consensus within the party.

In his address to supporters, Adelabu said he has not yet endorsed any specific candidate for the APC’s gubernatorial ticket in Oyo State. However, he emphasized that President Tinubu has promised to facilitate a consensus among party stakeholders. Should consensus fail, the President has indicated he will push for a direct primary to resolve the matter. Adelabu reiterated his close relationship with Tinubu, calling himself “the only true ‘son of Asiwaju’ in Oyo State,” a reference to the President’s popular nickname, Asiwaju.

The former minister quoted Tinubu as saying, “Bayo, the time has come. We had an agreement. You have been on this for long. This young ambition of yours—In as much as I love to have you around me, I will not stop you from pursuing your ambition.” Adelabu said he received this message with gratitude and is now prepared to begin his campaign efforts immediately. He stressed that he would not speak negatively about the President in public, acknowledging the importance of maintaining respect and unity within the party.

With the governorship race heating up in Oyo State, Adelabu’s announcement adds a significant dimension to the APC’s internal dynamics. His move, backed by the President’s endorsement, could influence party alignments and voter perceptions. As the election draws closer, all eyes will be on how the APC manages its internal processes to select a candidate who can challenge the opposition. The outcome of this primary will be crucial in shaping the state’s political landscape in the coming months.
