Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, is currently engaged in high-level consultations with key stakeholders, political allies, and aligned movements as he prepares for his 2027 presidential ambition, according to the Obidient Movement Worldwide. The movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, confirmed this in a statement released on Saturday, emphasizing that these discussions are part of a strategic effort to chart the best course for Nigeria’s future. The consultations come amid growing speculation and political developments, including reports that Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso may be shifting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Tanko acknowledged the increasing public interest and media reports surrounding these political shifts, particularly after Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, announced on Friday night that Obi and Kwankwaso would formally defect to the NDC the following week. Mohammed stated that the decision was reached after a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders within the movement. This development follows Obi’s absence from recent ADC meetings since the all-opposition political leaders’ summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in April. His non-attendance has fueled speculation about his future political alignment and intentions.
The Obidient Movement insists that Obi’s current engagements are focused on ensuring a strategic and effective path forward that prioritizes the interests of the Nigerian people. Tanko stressed that the movement, which was founded on principles of integrity, accountability, and active citizen participation, remains committed to making decisions that reflect its core values and long-term vision for national transformation. “These consultations are deliberate, thorough, and guided by the overriding objective of securing a future that works for all Nigerians,” the statement reads.
As the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape, Obi’s political maneuvers are being closely watched by analysts, party leaders, and the public. The potential realignment with the NDC could significantly reshape the opposition landscape, especially if it brings together key figures from different political backgrounds. The Obidient Movement’s emphasis on inclusive and transparent decision-making underscores its intent to maintain credibility and public trust. With Nigeria’s political environment increasingly dynamic, Obi’s next steps will likely influence the direction of opposition unity and electoral strategies in the coming years.
