Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika is seeking a move away from Belgian club Club Brugge at the end of the season, as he enters the final year of his contract and faces limited playing time under manager Ivan Leko. The 25-year-old, who joined the Jupiler Pro League side from FC Midtjylland in August 2022 for a club-record fee of 9.5 million euros, has become a key figure in transfer speculation across Europe. His current situation has sparked interest from top clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Turkey, including Galatasaray, Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Aston Villa.
Onyedika’s role in the first team has diminished in recent weeks, with Leko preferring Hugo Vetlesen in central midfield. Despite returning from injury after a 2-1 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, Onyedika has seen only 36 minutes of action across two matches — 19 minutes against KV Mechelen and 17 minutes against KAA Gent. The manager has defended his decision, stating that Onyedika’s performance was not the issue. “Not because Rapha was bad: even at Union, where he got injured, he played his game,” Leko told Voetbal Primeur. “He (Hugo Vetlesen) was simply excellent and crowned himself the match winner. In that case, you naturally stay in the team. That is just logical.”
The Nigerian international’s contract with Club Brugge is set to expire in June 2025, making him a prime candidate for a summer transfer. His market value and consistent performances during his first season in Belgium have attracted attention from clubs seeking experienced, technically gifted midfielders. Onyedika’s ability to control tempo, distribute the ball, and contribute defensively has made him a valuable asset, even if his minutes have been limited recently.
His potential departure could mark a significant shift in Club Brugge’s midfield dynamics, as they look to balance squad depth and long-term planning. For Onyedika, the move represents an opportunity to play more regularly and further develop his career on a bigger stage. With European leagues actively scouting talent, his next destination could shape his international career as well, as he continues to be a key player for the Super Eagles.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Onyedika’s performances and the club’s transfer strategy. His future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Nigerian midfielder is determined to find a club where he can play regularly and reach his full potential.
