The late Michael Eneramo continues to be remembered with deep admiration following the news of his tragic passing at the age of 40 while playing football in Kaduna.
Eneramo carved out a distinguished career across Africa and Europe, notably finishing as the top scorer in the 2010 CAF Champions League with eight goals.
He was also part of the Espérance Sportive de Tunis side that reached the final, losing to TP Mazembe.
On the international stage, the striker etched his name into Nigerian football folklore with a crucial goal during a 2010 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Tunisia, a moment that remains vivid for many Super Eagles fans.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Sudesh Singh has revealed that Eneramo once turned down a potential move to the Premier Soccer League giants despite strong interest.
“I have a personal story with him because I knew him very well,” Singh said on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com.
“When I was at Sundowns as the international scout, I watched him play a few times for Esperance. At the same time, he was being scouted by Turkish clubs. He was very humble.
“Although his nickname was ‘The Tank’ because of his size, he was soft-spoken, and he told me he wanted to go to Turkey.”
Singh went on to describe Eneramo as a gentle giant, echoing the views of many within the football fraternity.
“Eneramo was a gentle giant, as Pastor Peterside said. He’s somebody I knew personally and watched him play a few games on the continent. I developed a relationship with him even when he was playing in Turkey.”
An Esperance legend, Eneramo played for four different Turkish clubs, including Sivasspor, Beşiktaş, Karabükspor and İstanbul Başakşehir.
