Nineteen persons abducted during a violent communal clash between Ukpute community in Oju Local Government Area and Adiko community in Obi Local Government Area of Benue State have been successfully rescued by security operatives. The incident, which erupted on Monday, began after a woman from Ukpute was allegedly attacked and severely injured while working on her farm. This triggered a wave of retaliation by youths from the community, resulting in the abduction of 19 individuals and escalating tensions between the two groups.
In response, the Chairmen of Oju and Obi Local Government Areas, Ominyi Jackson Adah and Silas Odeh, swiftly mobilized security forces, including soldiers and police officers, to intervene and restore peace. The coordinated operation led to the safe recovery of all abducted victims, who have since been reunited with their families. Authorities confirmed that the rescue mission was carried out without further loss of life, marking a significant step toward de-escalating the crisis.
Following the rescue, the two local government chairmen visited Ukpute community in Ainu Ette to assess the situation and engage with community leaders. During the visit, they urged both communities to shun further violence and embrace peaceful dialogue to prevent future conflicts. They warned that any act of reprisal could lead to a more dangerous spiral of violence, stressing the importance of unity and mutual respect among residents.
Meanwhile, the Omi Ny’Igede Youth Wing Development Association has called for urgent humanitarian intervention to support those displaced by the violence. The group is appealing to the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide essential relief materials, including food, shelter, and medical supplies. Many families affected by the clash are currently struggling to meet basic needs due to the disruption caused by the conflict.
Communal clashes in Benue State are often rooted in longstanding disputes over land ownership and community boundaries. Authorities have consistently emphasized the need for early intervention and dialogue to prevent such incidents from escalating into large-scale violence. Security personnel remain stationed in the affected areas to ensure stability and monitor developments closely.
As calm gradually returns to Ukpute and Adiko, efforts are now focused on rebuilding trust and fostering long-term peace. The successful rescue of the abducted individuals serves as a reminder of the importance of coordinated security responses and community engagement in resolving conflicts. Moving forward, sustained dialogue and support from government agencies will be critical in preventing a recurrence of such violence.
