Four individuals have been charged by the police in Ibadan, Oyo State, over an alleged assault on a neighbour and two officers, with the case now before the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court. The defendants—Wahab Sikiru, 45; his wife Taiwo Sikiru, 35; Taiwo Balikis, 30; and Ifeoluwa Alabi, 26—are facing charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The incident reportedly occurred on April 27 at Ido, Ibadan, following a dispute that escalated into violence. All four pleaded not guilty to the charges during the court appearance on Tuesday.
According to the prosecutor, Corporal David Adepoju, the defendants conspired to attack their neighbour, Mrs. Aduragbemi Edujobi, beating her severely and tearing her clothes to pieces. The assault extended to two police officers—Inspector Mercy Sunday and Police Constable Phebe Olatunde—who were on duty at the scene. The officers were allegedly beaten, and their uniforms and badges were torn during the incident. The prosecution stated that these actions violate sections 249(d), 351, and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000, which cover conspiracy, assault, and offences that threaten public peace.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Mrs. Kausarat Ayofe, granted bail to each defendant in the sum of N500,000. Each defendant was required to provide two sureties, also in the same amount. The magistrate adjourned the case to June 24 for further hearing, allowing time for legal preparations and evidence gathering. The court’s decision to grant bail reflects the procedural rights of the accused under Nigerian law, while ensuring they remain available for trial.
The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of law enforcement personnel and the violent nature of the alleged offences. Public safety and the protection of police officers during duty remain critical concerns in Nigeria’s legal and social landscape. The outcome of this trial could set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in Oyo State and beyond. As the case proceeds, the court will examine evidence and testimonies to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused. The incident underscores the need for peaceful conflict resolution and respect for authority in communities across Nigeria.
