Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist infiltration into Kanama town in Borno State, neutralising four insurgents during a swift military response on April 22. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m., saw soldiers from the 159 Battalion deployed in Kanama reacting promptly to reports of gunfire within the community. Upon arrival, they discovered that terrorists had infiltrated parts of the town and immediately engaged them with disciplined fire, forcing the attackers into a disorganised retreat. The operation, which underscores the military’s continued vigilance in the Lake Chad region, resulted in the neutralisation of four insurgents.
The details were shared in a statement posted on X by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert monitoring developments in the region. Makama confirmed that the troops conducted a thorough exploitation of the area following the initial engagement, leading to the recovery of critical items from the defeated terrorists. Among the seized materials were two torchlight mobile phones and a sum of N21,000 in cash. These items are likely to provide intelligence on the group’s movements and possible networks, aiding future operations.
During the encounter, one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) sustained injuries and was promptly evacuated for medical treatment. The CJTF, which operates alongside military units in the region, continues to play a vital role in community-based security efforts. Despite the violence, Makama noted that the general situation across the theatre remains calm but unpredictable, highlighting the persistent threat posed by insurgents in the area. He also affirmed that troop morale and fighting efficiency remain high, reflecting the sustained commitment of Nigerian forces to securing the region.
The successful repulsion of the attack in Kanama demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated military and civilian security efforts in countering terrorist activities. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by communities in northeastern Nigeria, where insecurity continues to disrupt daily life. As the military maintains its operational tempo, the focus remains on protecting civilians and restoring lasting peace to the region. The incident in Kanama is a testament to the resilience of security forces and their determination to prevent further incursions by extremist groups.
