Lagos Police Officer Arrested Over Alleged Extortion of Motorist

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of an officer accused of extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State, following the circulation of a viral video showing the incident. The officer, identified through the footage, was taken into custody after being accused of demanding money from a driver who had all necessary vehicle documentation. The incident, which sparked widespread public outrage, occurred when the officer stopped the motorist and insisted the car’s colour—listed as “ash” on the registration papers—was actually “grey,” leading to a confrontation. The officer allegedly threatened to arrest the driver before demanding N30,000, which was later reduced to N10,000.

The video, shared widely on social media under the hashtag #epiccycl, showed the officer engaging in a heated exchange with the driver, who maintained he had no legal violations. The motorist claimed he was stopped without cause and subjected to undue pressure to pay the sum. The incident drew immediate attention from citizens and online commentators, many of whom condemned the officer’s conduct as a clear abuse of power. The video’s rapid spread across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) amplified public scrutiny of police behaviour on the roads.

In response, the Lagos State Police Command issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the officer’s arrest and detention. The statement, posted on the Force’s official X account, read: “UPDATE: The officer seen in the viral video as posted by #epiccycl has been identified, arrested, detained and queried. The #LagosPoliceNG will provide full outcome of the investigation as soon as possible.” The Force emphasized that disciplinary procedures are now underway and that the findings will be made public after internal reviews are completed.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about police misconduct and extortion in Nigeria, particularly in high-traffic areas like Lagos. While the Force has taken swift action, many Nigerians are calling for more consistent enforcement of accountability measures across all ranks. The case also underscores the growing role of social media in exposing misconduct and prompting official responses. As investigations continue, the public remains watchful, expecting transparency and justice.

The arrest of the officer sends a message that such actions will not be tolerated, but it also raises questions about systemic issues within the force. Moving forward, the outcome of this investigation could influence public trust in law enforcement and set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
