The National Rescue Movement (NRM) has declared it will not merge with any political party ahead of the 2027 general election, reaffirming its commitment to fielding its own presidential candidate. The party’s National Chairman, Prince Chinedu Obi, made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasizing the NRM’s readiness to challenge the incumbent government. He stressed that the party remains united and focused on its mission to provide a viable alternative in the upcoming elections.
Prince Obi told reporters that the NRM has no intention of joining any coalition or merging with other political parties. “We’re not planning on merging with any political party or joining a coalition. We’ll produce our presidential candidate,” he said. This declaration comes amid growing speculation about possible alliances among opposition parties seeking to consolidate their strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party’s unity was further reinforced by a recent court ruling. On Tuesday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court dismissed an appeal filed by Chief Edozie Njoku’s faction, effectively ending an internal dispute that had threatened to destabilize the party. Obi highlighted this legal victory as proof that the NRM is now operating as a single, cohesive entity. He described the party as one of the strongest political organizations in Nigeria, free from the internal conflicts that plague other opposition groups.
Obi also addressed public perceptions that the NRM is experiencing a crisis, attributing such views to misinformation. “We want Nigerians to know that the impression they have that the NRM has a crisis because of some individuals who are not even members of the party, that there’s no single crisis in NRM,” he said. He reiterated that the party remains committed to its core mission of rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges.
The NRM is now positioning itself as a credible political force, ready to support any aspirant strong enough to contest any available position in the 2027 elections. Obi emphasized that the party is not just focused on the presidency but is also preparing to contest at all levels of government. He urged Nigerians to look beyond political noise and recognize the NRM’s readiness to deliver meaningful change.
As Nigeria prepares for the next general election, the NRM’s stance signals a firm intent to stand independently and offer a fresh political alternative. The party’s legal victory and public declaration of unity may influence voter perceptions and strengthen its position in the competitive political landscape. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the NRM’s actions will be closely watched as it seeks to prove its mettle as a serious contender.
