The 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) will be hosted by Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha, marking a historic shift for the prestigious event. The 12th edition of the awards, set for May 9, 2026, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, will see a new era begin as Bovi and Nomzamo take the stage, stepping into the shoes of long-time host IK Osakioduwa, who anchored the ceremony since its inception in 2013. This change signals a deliberate move toward fresh energy and broader continental representation, with the duo bringing distinct talents and international appeal to the event.
Bovi Ugboma, born in Benin City, has over two decades of experience in Nigerian entertainment. He gained fame through his sitcom “Extended Family” and later expanded his influence with the successful “Man on Fire” comedy tour, which reached audiences in Lagos, London, Toronto, and beyond. His film “My Village People” also achieved a milestone by grossing over 100 million naira at the Nigerian box office. When approached for the AMVCA hosting role, Bovi admitted he was surprised, especially given IK’s long-standing association with the event. “I wasn’t expecting it. Considering IK has been the host from the beginning, I was really happy when I got the call,” he shared. He has since committed to rigorous preparation to ensure a memorable and engaging show.
Nomzamo Mbatha, hailing from KwaMashu Township near Durban, brings a global perspective to the AMVCA stage. Known for her role in the South African drama “Isibaya,” she made her Hollywood debut in “Coming 2 America” alongside Eddie Murphy. She recently starred as Queen Nandi in the acclaimed series “Shaka iLembe,” where she also served as executive producer. Beyond acting, Nomzamo is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, climate advocate, and founder of the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation. Her presence adds a layer of continental prestige and cultural depth to the ceremony.
Together, Bovi and Nomzamo form a dynamic duo—Bovi with his sharp humor and deep understanding of Nigerian pop culture, and Nomzamo with her elegance, international experience, and strong advocacy work. Their pairing reflects the AMVCA’s evolving mission to celebrate African talent across borders. The 2026 edition also introduces two new categories: Best Indigenous Language (North Africa) and Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa), further emphasizing the awards’ pan-African vision. Veteran actress Joke Silva has been appointed Head Judge, and the full list of nominees has already been released.
With these changes, the AMVCA is poised to reach new heights, attracting wider audiences and spotlighting diverse voices across the continent. The event on May 9, 2026, promises to be a milestone in African entertainment history.
