The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a formal clarification following a viral video that sparked public outrage over an incident involving its personnel in the Central Business District of Abuja. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, April 16, 2026, during a routine traffic enforcement operation, has been misrepresented in social media narratives. According to the FRSC, the operation was conducted by the RS7.14 Central Business District Unit Command, and the vehicle stopped was found to be in violation of traffic laws, including overloading and non-compliance with seatbelt regulations.
The FRSC emphasized that its officers followed standard procedures in enforcing the law. The driver, however, became non-compliant and refused to follow lawful directives, leading to a tense situation that attracted a growing crowd. As the gathering escalated, security concerns increased, prompting the officers to exercise restraint and de-escalate the situation. The Corps stated clearly that no FRSC personnel assaulted, threatened, or used force against the driver or any occupant of the vehicle.
A key point in the FRSC’s statement is the clarification regarding the individual seen in the video holding an iron rod. The Corps confirmed that this person is neither affiliated with the driver nor with the FRSC, but is instead a passerby whose actions have been misinterpreted and used to distort the true events. The FRSC highlighted that its personnel demonstrated professionalism, emotional intelligence, and restraint throughout the incident, choosing to disengage to prevent further chaos and protect public safety.
The decision to step back was not a sign of weakness, the Corps stressed, but a strategic move to maintain order and prevent potential violence. The FRSC reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety laws while upholding human rights, discipline, and professionalism. The statement was signed by Osondu Ohaeri, Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, who urged the public to disregard misleading content and continue cooperating with law enforcement officers.
The viral video had previously shown what appeared to be a confrontation between FRSC officials and a civilian, with allegations that an officer struck a man with an iron rod. These claims have now been debunked by the Corps, which insists that the footage has been taken out of context. The FRSC remains dedicated to its mission of ensuring safer roads across Nigeria and will continue to operate within the framework of the law. As public awareness grows, the Corps hopes for greater understanding and support in its efforts to maintain road safety and order.
