The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has declared that it stands to gain significantly from the ongoing internal crises within opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The party’s spokesperson, Issa Abubakar-Asalafi, stated that the deepening divisions within these opposition groups could lead to more defections into the ruling APC, strengthening its position ahead of future elections. He emphasized that political success hinges on unity and organizational strength, warning that disunity weakens any party’s ability to challenge a well-structured ruling party.
Abubakar-Asalafi highlighted recent high-profile defections, including that of Aminu Bande, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate, who switched allegiance to the ADC. However, the ADC itself is now facing leadership disputes and factional conflicts, undermining its credibility and cohesion. These internal struggles, according to the APC spokesperson, create an environment where political actors are more likely to seek stability and opportunity within the ruling party.
The APC has already seen substantial gains from opposition defections. All three senators elected under the PDP banner in Kebbi State, along with several members of the House of Representatives, have since joined the APC. This mass shift reflects growing confidence in the party’s leadership and governance, Abubakar-Asalafi noted. He added that the APC remains optimistic about securing a strong victory in the 2027 general elections, citing its current momentum and the weakening state of opposition parties.
“Politics is a game of numbers, and parties must put their houses in order before challenging a ruling party,” Abubakar-Asalafi said. He urged opposition leaders to resolve their internal disputes quickly, warning that continued fragmentation could not only diminish their electoral prospects but also erode democratic competition in the state. The APC, he stressed, is closely monitoring developments and remains open to welcoming more politicians who choose to align with its vision.
The spokesperson also pointed out that the APC’s dominance in Kebbi is not just a result of electoral victories but also sustained political strategy and effective governance. He noted that the party’s ability to attract top talent from rival parties speaks volumes about its current standing and appeal. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the APC is positioning itself as the most stable and viable political force in the state.
As political dynamics continue to shift, the APC’s strategic advantage may grow if opposition parties fail to unite. The party’s confidence is rooted in both its past performance and the current wave of defections. The coming months will be critical for opposition groups to regroup and present a cohesive front, or risk further erosion of their influence in Kebbi State politics.
