The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations that any political party was denied access to Eagle Square in Abuja, stating that no formal application had been submitted by any group. Speaking during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital, Wike emphasized that the use of Eagle Square is governed by a clear, formal process managed by the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL). He stressed that political parties must submit official applications and pay required fees to secure the venue, adding that the FCT Administration does not arbitrarily deny access to any group.
Wike specifically addressed claims made by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling them a “usual attempt to gain public sympathy.” He reiterated that the FCT Administration has no record of any party applying for the use of Eagle Square, and therefore, no denial could have occurred. The minister also clarified that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome falls under the jurisdiction of the Sports Commission, not the FCT Administration, and thus, any claims about denial of access to that venue are also unfounded.
He pointed out that both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had previously used the facilities after following the proper procedures. “When the APC used the venue and the PDP used the Stadium Velodrome, they complied with the process,” Wike stated. “We do not deny anyone access if the rules are followed.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and equal access for all political parties, provided they meet the necessary requirements.
During the inspection tour, Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of key infrastructure projects across Abuja. He highlighted that contractors have assured the FCT Ministry that major road rehabilitation works will be completed by May 15. Additionally, the installation of streetlights across the city is expected to be finalized before the end of May. These developments are part of broader efforts to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister’s comments come amid heightened political activity ahead of upcoming elections, with various parties seeking venues for rallies and campaign events. His insistence on due process and formal applications aims to prevent disputes and ensure fairness in the allocation of public facilities. As Abuja continues to undergo significant transformation, the timely completion of road and lighting projects is expected to boost public confidence and support for ongoing government initiatives.
