The nomination of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as the preferred candidate for Deputy Governor of Kano State has gained strong backing from 27 out of 31 APC stakeholders from the legacy faction of the party, according to Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee. The announcement follows the resignation of Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and comes after Governor Abba Yusuf stepped aside to allow the legacy group, led by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to nominate a replacement. Doguwa praised the governor’s decision as unprecedented and a powerful display of humility and party unity.
In a statement released on Sunday, Doguwa commended Governor Abba Yusuf for willingly surrendering his constitutional right to appoint the deputy governor, allowing the legacy faction to select their nominee. He described the governor’s gesture as “uncommon magnanimity” and a clear sign of his commitment to party cohesion. Doguwa also noted that the governor had allocated three commissioner positions to the legacy group, further strengthening their role in the state’s governance structure.
The meeting, presided over by Dr. Ganduje, saw overwhelming support for Murtala Sule Garo, who served as the party’s deputy gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election. Doguwa stated that Garo’s political influence spans all 44 local government areas of Kano State, making him a strategic choice for the position. He also highlighted Garo’s connection to Gwarzo Kabo federal constituency, the same region where the previous deputy governor hailed from, adding a sense of continuity and regional balance.
While there were a few dissenting voices, Doguwa emphasized that 27 of the 31 attendees unanimously supported Garo. The legacy group has submitted three names to comply with the governor’s directive, but Doguwa made it clear that the other two are “shadow nominees” or “space holders,” with Garo being the only substantive candidate. He urged Governor Yusuf to accept the collective decision of the legacy faction, assuring him of full support in the 2027 elections.
Doguwa’s statement underscores the growing influence of the legacy faction within the APC in Kano State and highlights the importance of internal consensus in shaping political appointments. The move is seen as a significant step in consolidating party unity ahead of future electoral contests. As the governor prepares to make the final appointment, the legacy group’s unified stance may play a decisive role in shaping the state’s political landscape in the coming years.
