Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the commencement of a structured transition process ahead of the 2027 governorship election, revealing that his administration is engaging credible individuals to ensure a smooth handover and continuity in governance. In Newsletter No. 136 titled “The Business of Governance,” Makinde emphasized that the process is designed to provide a fair and transparent platform for all aspirants seeking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket. He pledged to announce the outcome at the appropriate time, stating that the decision will reflect both the achievements of his administration and the future aspirations of Oyo State.
The governor has tasked his advisory council, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Bolaji Ayorinde, with consulting all governorship aspirants on the PDP platform. The council is expected to present recommendations for a candidate who will continue the vision of Omituntun 3.0, the development agenda currently being implemented. Among the aspirants who have responded to the call are Adedeji Olajide (Odidiomo), a Member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan South-West/North-East; Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board; Bimbo Adekanmbi, former Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Planning; Debo Akande, State Chairman of the Agribusiness Development Agency; and Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
Makinde acknowledged the public’s keen interest in the transition process, noting that many residents are closely watching how leadership will be chosen. He said, “I am aware that many of you are watching closely as we approach a transition period in Oyo State. You have questions about continuity, leadership, and the future direction of our state.” He assured the public that the process will be conducted with integrity and transparency.
Earlier, the governor had announced that the PDP candidate for the 2027 election would emerge through consensus on April 8. In a broader appeal to Nigerians, Makinde expressed concern over the potential for Nigeria to become a one-party state. He urged citizens to remain politically active and engaged, stressing that democracy thrives on diversity of thought and voices. “Democracy is built on plurality, on different voices, including those we may not agree with, because that keeps a system open, accountable, and responsive,” he said.
He warned that withdrawing from political discourse could erode democratic institutions. “Today, voices that speak against a one-party state are being openly threatened. Opposition is being fragmented or pushed to the margins. When the government cannot be held accountable, everyday challenges become harder to resolve,” Makinde added. He concluded by emphasizing that democracy must be defended through active participation. “Democracy will not be protected by silence, but by those who stay engaged, ask questions, and insist that institutions work for the people,” he said.
As Oyo State prepares for the 2027 gubernatorial election, the transition process under Governor Makinde’s leadership is expected to set a precedent for inclusive and transparent political succession in Nigeria.
