Benue State on Lockdown as Tinubu, Alia, Suswam Declared in 2027: What You Need to Know

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has declared that the state is fully locked down in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during a visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat in Makurdi on Thursday, Suswam emphasized that Benue is now a stronghold for the APC and will deliver massive backing for Tinubu’s re-election bid and Alia’s re-election campaign. He stated that the state aims to provide even greater support than it did in previous elections to ensure a bigger and better share of the nation’s democratic dividends.

Suswam, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, said his decision was driven by President Tinubu’s economic reforms. He noted that Tinubu’s leadership has already yielded significant benefits for Benue, including the appointment of a Secretary to the Government of the Federation and a Grade A minister from the state. “It is important that every Benue son and daughter supports his re-election and the governor,” he said, adding that while the initial stages of the reforms may bring hardship, the long-term gains will be substantial.

He described Tinubu as a courageous leader who has taken bold steps to steer the economy, and he urged Benue people to remain patient and supportive. Suswam also praised Governor Alia for continuing projects initiated by his predecessors, urging him to maintain this momentum. He stressed that Benue has historically been a one-party state and is now firmly aligned with the APC.

During the visit, APC State Chairman Mr. Benjamin Omale welcomed Suswam and other elder statesmen, calling their presence a major political statement. Omale expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for upholding truth and justice in the matter of party structures in Benue. He assured Tinubu of the full commitment and support of the Benue APC in the 2027 elections.

Suswam did not rule out seeking an elective office in 2027, saying all options remain open. His move to the APC has been seen as a significant boost to the party’s prospects in Benue, a key political battleground in the North Central region. The defection underscores growing momentum for the APC in the state, as political leaders rally behind the national and state leadership.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Suswam’s declaration signals a strategic shift in Benue’s political landscape, positioning the state as a critical stronghold for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
