2027: Former Governors Rally Behind Tinubu in Bid for Second Presidential Term

Former governors from the South-East have publicly declared their support for President Bola Tinubu, citing significant infrastructural development and strategic appointments in the region as key reasons for their endorsement. The announcement came during the formal inauguration of the Forum of South-East Former Governors on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening regional unity and advising current leaders on critical national and zonal matters. The forum, described as non-partisan and inclusive of all former governors regardless of political affiliation, issued a communiqué outlining its mandate and stance.

The communiqué, read by Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor David Umahi, emphasized that the forum’s primary goal is to support serving governors in the South-East while offering guidance on pressing regional and national issues. The former leaders commended President Tinubu for what they called an “infrastructure revolution” across the region, noting that roads, bridges, and other critical projects are being executed with renewed vigor. They also praised the President for appointing individuals from the South-East into key federal positions, a gesture they said reflects inclusivity and recognition of the region’s contributions.

The forum expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its continued support to state governments nationwide, stating that this backing has directly contributed to developmental progress in the South-East. “We thank Mr. President for the support extended to the governors of the South East, and indeed to all governors across the country,” the communiqué read. “This support has greatly contributed to the achievements recorded in their respective offices.” They further lauded current South-East governors for their work in infrastructure, security, and empowerment programs, affirming that these efforts are benefiting the people.

In a clear political statement, the former governors declared that all serving governors in the South-East are united in their support for President Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections. “We boldly state that all the governors of the South East are supporting Mr President’s re-election, and we commend them for this strategic decision,” they said. The forum pledged to continue backing this position and will engage with current governors through planned courtesy visits to discuss collaboration and development initiatives.

The inaugural meeting brought together notable figures including former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chris Ngige, Sullivan Chime, Okezie Ikpeazu, David Umahi, and Martin Elechi. While some former governors were absent due to health issues and other commitments, the forum expressed confidence that over 90 per cent participation would be achieved in future sessions. Moving forward, the body plans to sensitize citizens on government achievements and advocate for inclusive development across the region. This new platform is expected to play a crucial role in shaping policy and strengthening governance in the South-East.
