Leaders and chieftains of the Oyo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have held parallel state congresses ahead of the 2027 general elections, sparking internal tensions within the party. The two rival congresses took place simultaneously on Saturday at different locations within Ibadan metropolis, signaling a deepening leadership crisis. One congress was held at the party’s official office in the Oke Itunu area, while the other occurred at an event centre along the old Ife Road. Both gatherings produced competing leadership structures, raising concerns about the party’s unity and preparedness for the upcoming elections.
The congress at the party’s Oke Itunu office re-elected Mr. Yinka Olona as State Chairman, with Alhaji Tiamiyu Abidikugu as Deputy State Chairman. Barrister Bimpe Adelowo was appointed State Publicity Secretary, and Alhaja Fatimoh Salawu emerged as State Women Leader. Other key appointments included Barr. Dauda Jinadu as State Legal Adviser, Hon. James Obasa as State Financial Secretary, Chief Ayobami Ojedokun as State Organizing Secretary, Niyi Lekan Ogunbowale as Youth Leader, Hon. Kazeem Abidemi Alarape as State Treasurer, and Dr. Oke Adebowale as Coordinator on Elections Matter/INEC Liaison.
Meanwhile, the congress held at the event centre along the old Ife Road produced a different slate of leaders. Hon. Jimoh Adelowo was declared State Chairman, with Remi Abidogun as Deputy Chairman. Fatai Adelakun was named Oyo South Senatorial District Chairman, Simeon Adegboye as Oyo Central Senatorial Chairman, and Alhaji Ajibade Khalid as Oyo North Senatorial Chairman. Daud Temitope was appointed Youth Leader for the faction.
The Olona-led executive has publicly stated that they will not allow anyone to hijack the party from them, indicating a firm stance against the rival leadership. This development follows similar parallel congresses conducted at the ward and local government levels across the state, suggesting a widespread internal rift. The party’s leadership crisis could impact its campaign strategies and electoral performance in 2027, especially if the divisions persist without resolution.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the ADC in Oyo State faces mounting pressure to unify its ranks. The parallel congresses highlight deep factionalism within the party, which may hinder its ability to present a cohesive front to voters. The outcome of this leadership tussle will likely influence the party’s relevance and effectiveness in the upcoming political landscape.
